This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a intense examination about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story commences when the couple move from the big city to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
